German Minister of the Economy Peter Altmaier announces the creation of around 20 “real laboratories” to test technologies of the future.

Berlin (dpa) – Future-oriented technologies such as hydrogen and energy storage can soon be tested on an industrial scale in Germany.

Peter Altmaier, the German Minister of the Economy, announced this week the forthcoming opening of about twenty “real laboratories”. They will be funded up to 100 million euros per year and will be used to test certain solutions on an industrial scale.

This initiative, which will create new jobs, could help protect the climate. It aims to make Germany the world leader in the field of hydrogen technologies. Coupled with a fuel cell, it could be used as a driving force for cars. However, its use is still very expensive.

The “real laboratories” will be located throughout Germany, including coal mining basins such as Lusatia or the Rhine mining area. Germany plans to phase out coal by 2038.
