EIB Grants €450 Million Loan for OMV Green Hydrogen Plant in Austria

14 Jul 2026

The European Investment Bank has granted a €450 million loan to support the construction of OMV’s green hydrogen production plant in Bruck an der Leitha, Austria, a project expected to contribute significantly to the decarbonization of the Schwechat refinery in Lower Austria.

The 140 MW facility, currently under construction, represents a total investment of €600 million and is scheduled to begin operations by the end of 2027. Powered by renewable energy, the plant is expected to produce up to 23,000 tons of green hydrogen annually.

OMV said the facility will enable local green hydrogen production and improve the sustainability of fuel and chemical products at its Schwechat refinery. The company estimates that the project will reduce carbon emissions by about 150,000 tons per year, equivalent to roughly 10 percent of the refinery’s current direct emissions, based on OMV’s internal calculations of planned annual hydrogen production.

Under OMV Strategy 2030, the company is focusing on renewable fuels and sustainable chemical feedstock, targeting production capacity of about 900 kilotons by 2030. OMV’s existing assets include a co-processing plant and a 10 MW green hydrogen facility at the Schwechat refinery. Projects under development include a Sustainable Aviation Fuel/Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil plant at the OMV Petrom Petrobrazi refinery, 20 MW and 35 MW green hydrogen projects in Romania operated by OMV Petrom, and the 140 MW green hydrogen plant in Austria.

OMV said these investments support its ambition to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.
