Chubu Electric Power Miraiz Co Inc has inked an off-site virtual power purchase agreement (VPPA) with Enshu Forest Energy LLC to procure environmental credits from a 7.1-MW biomass-fired power plant.
Under the VPPA, Enshu Forest will deliver 26 million kWh per year worth of environmental credits to the offtaker, which will supply them to its customers, including Shizuoka Railway Co Ltd and Hamamatsu Photonics KK (TYO:6965), the subsidiary of Japanese utility Chubu Electric Power Co Inc (TYO:9502), said recently.
Located in Shizuoka Prefecture, the Enshu Forest Energy Power Station is capable of generating approximately 51 million kWh annually. The facility uses wood chips from unused thinned timber from the region as its fuel source.
Chubu Electric estimates that this VPPA can result in a total annual reduction of some 10,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.
