Mitsubishi Power Wins Boiler Supply Contract for Saudi Fuel Conversion Project

July 13, 2026 — Mitsubishi Power, a power solutions brand of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI), has received orders to supply key boiler components for a fuel conversion project at existing large-scale thermal power plants in Saudi Arabia.

The project will convert heavy oil-fired boilers at the Jeddah South Power Plant and the Shuqaiq Power Plant into dual-fuel boilers capable of switching between, and co-firing, natural gas and heavy oil. The contract was signed between Dar Al Balad Contracting and Operations (DAB), a local engineering, procurement and construction company, and Mitsubishi Corporation Machinery, acting as the authorized agent of Mitsubishi Power.

Both targeted plants are located on Saudi Arabia’s west coast. Each has a capacity of approximately 2.9 GW and consists of four units, which began operations sequentially in 2017. Mitsubishi Power originally supplied the existing boiler components as the original equipment manufacturer when the plants were built.

The project is being carried out under Saudi Arabia’s energy policy, with Saudi Energy as the end customer. Through its long-standing local partner DAB, Mitsubishi Power will provide technical support to help convert the boilers and ensure long-term stable plant operations after completion.

Saudi Arabia is seeking to shift its power generation fuel mix from heavy oil to natural gas under its national strategy, Saudi Vision 2030. The country aims to increase the share of natural gas-fired power generation to more than 50 percent, and domestic power producers, including Saudi Energy, have been directed to begin operations using natural gas.

Mitsubishi Power said the fuel conversion is particularly important on Saudi Arabia’s west coast, where heavy oil-fired power generation remains high and electricity demand is strong. The company said the project will help maintain a stable power supply while supporting environmental requirements and reducing carbon dioxide emissions.

Makoto Fujita, Senior General Manager of the Steam Power Business Division, Energy Systems at MHI, said the Jeddah South and Shuqaiq power plants have played an important role in ensuring stable electricity supply on Saudi Arabia’s west coast.

“As the OEM of the existing boilers, we are very proud to contribute to the country’s energy transition and CO2 emissions reduction through our participation in this fuel conversion project,” Fujita said. “We will dedicate ourselves to the successful completion of this project and continue to provide support for the long-term stable operation of the plants.”

Mitsubishi Power said it will continue promoting high-performance and reliable technologies to support stable power supply, economic development and environmental conservation through low-carbon and decarbonized energy solutions, as well as the modernization of existing power generation assets.
