IHI and GE Vernova achieve milestone with 100% ammonia combustion in large scale test

19 Mar 2026  by GE Vernova

IHI Corporation (IHI) and GE Vernova announced that they have successfully tested 100% ammonia combustion in a GE Vernova F-class gas turbine. The emission levels during the test are in line with the development roadmap for 100% ammonia combustion gas turbines established by both companies, with the goal of achieving commercial deployment by 2030.

"The key links in the ammonia value chain are gradually being improved," said Norihiro Ozawa, Executive Managing Director and President of the Resources, Energy, and Environment Business Unit at IHI. "Since the signing of the joint development agreement in 2024, the cooperation between the two companies has made significant progress, and the efforts of both teams have now borne fruit. The successful achievement of 100% ammonia combustion in a full-size F-class gas turbine marks an important milestone and helps consolidate the decarbonization roadmap envisioned by customers in the power industry.". ”

The demonstration was conducted in a specially constructed test facility at IHI, designed to replicate the operating conditions of the GE Vernova F-class gas turbine.

"The successful demonstration of operating an F-class gas turbine using 100% ammonia fuel marks a crucial step in our journey towards a low-carbon energy future," said Jeremy Wetherby, head of GE Vernova Carbon Solutions. "This achievement solidifies our development roadmap and underscores the strength of our partnership with IHI. We see the tremendous potential of ammonia as a carbon-free combustion fuel and are enthusiastic to continue collaborating to unlock ammonia's role in advancing the global decarbonization process."
