SoftBank Delivers World-First SRv6 MUP Services on 5G Commercial Network

20 Dec 2025  by thefastmode
SoftBank announced in December 2025 that it has successfully launched limited commercial services using Segment Routing IPv6 Mobile User Plane (SRv6 MUP) technology via Fixed Wireless Access on its 5G network. This marks the world's first deployment of such services on a live 5G commercial network.

SRv6 MUP offers a cost-effective and straightforward approach to implementing advanced 5G capabilities, including Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC) and network slicing. These features support low-latency applications and customized network performance for different use cases.

SoftBank has played a leading role in developing SRv6 MUP, which enables access to these 5G advantages at reduced expense and with simpler configuration compared to conventional mobile network architectures. Following field trials in February 2023 and extensive testing, the company progressed toward integration on its operational 5G infrastructure. The successful provision of services in December 2025 represents a significant milestone.

The operator plans to gradually extend coverage areas, applying insights obtained from initial commercial operations. SoftBank intends to deliver low-latency services powered by SRv6 MUP to a broader customer base and will continue refining additional service options for commercial deployment.

Through partnerships with technology providers and telecommunications operators across various countries and regions, SoftBank seeks to promote wider adoption of SRv6 MUP, facilitating efficient realization of MEC and network slicing globally.

The implementation relies on Broadcom's Jericho2 family routing chipset. It incorporates the ArcOS network operating system from Arrcus and the VMware Telco Cloud Platform from Broadcom.

"SRv6 MUP from SoftBank is game-changing in its ability to deliver low latency and high-fidelity applications on top of 5G infrastructure. We are delighted to have Arrcus play a key role in partnering with SoftBank," said Shekar Ayyar, CEO and Chairman of Arrcus.

"We are pleased to witness our partners, SoftBank and Arrcus, innovate and deploy this groundbreaking shift in Fixed Wireless Access backhaul technology. Their implementation of SRv6 Mobile User Plane brings significant cost reductions and simplifies network complexity in this rapidly expanding sector," stated Oozie Parizer, senior director of marketing, Core Switching Group, Broadcom.

This achievement demonstrates practical progress in enhancing 5G networks for diverse applications. By streamlining infrastructure requirements, SRv6 MUP supports scalable delivery of edge computing and specialized connectivity, contributing to the evolution of next-generation wireless services.

Industry observers recognize the deployment as an important step toward more accessible and efficient utilization of 5G potential, particularly in fixed wireless scenarios where rapid setup and optimized performance prove valuable.
