Mitsubishi Develops High-Efficiency 7GHz GaN Module to Power 5G-Advanced & 6G Networks

16 Jun 2025  by thefastmode
Mitsubishi Electric has announced the development of a compact 7GHz band gallium nitride (GaN) power amplifier module (PAM), claimed to be the first of its kind globally with the highest power efficiency in its class. This innovation is designed to enhance both installation flexibility and energy efficiency for 5G-Advanced base stations, contributing to future 6G infrastructure.

The company successfully demonstrated the performance of the new module using 5G-Advanced communication signals, marking the first such validation in the world. The development signifies a step forward in advancing communication technologies and addressing growing demands for high-speed, energy-efficient wireless systems.

The new GaN PAM was achieved through Mitsubishi Electric’s proprietary matching-circuit technology combined with high-performance GaN transistors. The module features a compact design, with prototype dimensions of only 12.0mm by 8.0mm, enabling high-density mounting. This small size contributes to simplified deployment in increasingly complex network environments, especially where space and energy optimization are critical.

Mitsubishi Electric stated that this compact and efficient PAM is expected to support the widespread deployment of 5G-Advanced and pave the way for the eventual adoption of 6G by improving base station capabilities. The company will continue its R&D efforts to transition this technology into practical use for commercial base stations.

Technical specifications and further details will be presented at the IEEE International Microwave Symposium 2025, scheduled from June 15 to 20 in San Francisco, California. As part of the symposium, Mitsubishi Electric will also participate in a live demonstration of the technology at the exhibition venue in collaboration with Wupatec.

The breakthrough aligns with global trends toward more compact and power-efficient communication infrastructure. By reducing the size of key components while maintaining or improving performance, network operators can reduce operational costs and environmental impact, while enhancing network reach and quality.

Mitsubishi Electric’s innovation highlights the company’s commitment to contributing to the evolution of wireless technologies through advanced materials and compact design engineering. As demand for high-speed and reliable mobile communications continues to rise, such developments play a vital role in supporting scalable network growth and technological progress.
