Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) has secured the full engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract from Zeon Corporation for a new Cyclo-olefin Polymer (COP) production facility to be built in Shunan City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan. The plant is scheduled to be completed in the first half of fiscal 2028.

COP is a high-performance engineering plastic valued for its superior optical transparency, extremely low moisture absorption, and minimal impurity content. These properties make it increasingly sought after in optical components, medical devices, and advanced semiconductor manufacturing applications, where growing global demand is anticipated.

Under the contract, MHI will handle process design, procurement of core equipment, and installation of all plant systems. Architectural design and civil engineering works will be carried out by Fujita Corporation.

Zeon selected MHI's proposal for its proven expertise and extensive track record in constructing facilities for high-performance chemical materials. The award reinforces MHI's position as a leading contractor in this specialised segment.

The project expands MHI's portfolio beyond traditional large-scale chemical plants for commodities such as methanol and ammonia into the fast-growing field of advanced functional materials. It further strengthens the company's presence in both the Japanese and international markets for chemical production infrastructure.

MHI stated that it will continue to support industrial progress and the development of a sustainable society by delivering solutions that meet evolving technological and environmental requirements. The new COP facility will contribute to securing stable domestic supply of a critical material while addressing rising worldwide needs in high-technology sectors.
