Kuraray to Expand Production Capacity for Optical Films in Japan

Kuraray Co., based in Tokyo, Japan, has revealed plans to enhance its production capacity for optical-use poval film, a critical material for polarizing films used in liquid crystal displays (LCDs). The expansion will take place at the company’s Saijo Plant in Saijo City, Ehime Prefecture, Japan. The project will increase the plant’s annual production capacity from 296 million square meters to 334 million square meters, with operations at the expanded facility expected to commence in December 2027.

The global LCD market is experiencing growth, particularly due to the increasing demand for larger television screens, which requires larger panel sizes. This trend has driven a rising need for wider optical-use poval film, a key component in LCD polarizing films. To meet this demand and ensure a consistent supply, Kuraray is investing in new production infrastructure at its Saijo Plant.

The new production line will be designed to manufacture wider optical-use poval film, including films compatible with 3-meter-wide polarizing films. This upgrade will enable Kuraray to better serve the evolving needs of the display industry.
