Sunfire Lands Feed Deal for p2x Solutions’ 40 MW Hydrogen Project in Finland

German electrolyzer manufacturer Sunfire has been chosen by Finnish green hydrogen company P2X Solutions to carry out the front-end engineering design (FEED) study for a 40 MW hydrogen project in Joensuu, Finland. The study, which has already begun, will define the technical requirements and specifications for a 40 MW pressurized alkaline electrolyzer in collaboration with integration partners.

According to the companies, the hydrogen produced at the Joensuu facility will be used to generate e-methanol, a synthetic fuel expected to contribute to reducing CO₂ emissions, particularly in the shipping and aviation sectors. This project represents a key step in Finland’s growing hydrogen economy and the broader European energy transition.

P2X Solutions CEO Herkko Plit stated: “The FEED study is an important milestone towards the investment decision of our next undertaking in Joensuu, which will triple our total capacity for green hydrogen production. We are very pleased to tackle this challenge together with Sunfire and its technology.”

This new cooperation continues the partnership established during the Harjavalta project, where P2X Solutions and Sunfire worked together on a 20 MW hydrogen plant. The Harjavalta facility, which began commercial operations in early 2025, marked Finland’s first industrial-scale green hydrogen plant and demonstrated both companies’ capabilities in developing clean energy infrastructure.

Sunfire CEO Nils Aldag said: “The commissioning of the Harjavalta plant showcased the strong execution capabilities of P2X Solutions and Sunfire in delivering commercial hydrogen projects. I’m excited that we are now taking our partnership to the next level in Joensuu — as a trusted technology partner alongside P2X Solutions, with a clear mission: to drive the growth of the hydrogen economy in Finland and Europe.”

The Joensuu project aims to significantly expand Finland’s green hydrogen production capacity, supporting the development of synthetic fuels and other low-carbon energy applications. It also reflects the country’s ambition to strengthen its renewable energy infrastructure and reduce dependency on fossil fuels.

Separately, at the beginning of 2025, Sunfire was selected by Basque Hydrogen, a consortium led by Spanish company Petronor, a subsidiary of Repsol, together with Enagás Renovable and the Basque Government’s energy agency Ente Vasco de la Energía, to supply a 10 MW electrolyzer for a green hydrogen project in Bilbao, Spain.

Bilbao, considered a strategic energy hub in the Basque Country, hosts multiple hydrogen initiatives involving industrial companies and research centers. Repsol described the port city as a “crucial hub” in its efforts to advance decarbonization.

Through projects in Finland and Spain, Sunfire continues to play a growing role in Europe’s hydrogen sector by providing electrolyzer technology that supports the production of renewable fuels and the transition to a low-carbon energy system.
