The terminal, located approximately 15 kilometers off the coast of Italy’s Veneto region, currently has a regasification capacity of 9.6 billion cubic meters per year. Following the upcoming upgrade, this capacity will increase to 10.4 billion cubic meters annually. As of 2024, it was already the LNG terminal with the largest storage capacity in Italy, according to data from Statista.
Terminale GNL Adriatico, the operator of the terminal, is jointly owned by VTTI (holding a 70% stake) and Snam (30%). Snam increased its ownership share in December last year. The terminal has been operational since 2009 and plays a key role in supplying LNG to the national energy system.
The facility is composed of a gravity-based structure (GBS) that houses two LNG storage tanks, a regasification plant, and infrastructure for LNG mooring and unloading. It connects to Italy’s national gas distribution network via an undersea pipeline, allowing for efficient delivery of processed gas from offshore to inland demand centers.
This expansion project aims to support Italy’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its energy infrastructure and enhance energy security by increasing access to diversified sources of natural gas. Once the upgrade is complete, the terminal will be better positioned to meet domestic consumption needs and support overall system reliability, particularly during periods of high seasonal demand.
