Ericsson is set to significantly enhance its investment in Japan's connectivity ecosystem, with plans to create up to 300 high-skilled next-generation telecom jobs. This move is part of the company’s broader strategy to integrate Japan’s technological capabilities into its global ecosystem. The announcement coincides with a visit to Japan by Börje Ekholm, Ericsson’s President and CEO.

Ekholm emphasized Japan's role as a leader in embracing emerging technologies and its position as an early adopter of new generations of connectivity. He stated: “We are on the cusp of the biggest transformative and innovative changes in the history of technology, and connectivity is the key to making them happen through open high-performing programmable networks.” Ericsson intends to invest in Japan’s legacy of technological innovation, focusing on advanced RAN (Radio Access Network) R&D in 5G and beyond. This investment will not only benefit the local ecosystem of partners and customers but will also contribute to Ericsson's global efforts.

While the initiative is still in its early stages, Ekholm assured that the commitment is actively progressing. He added: “Our intent to expand R&D in Japan emphasizes how strategically important the market is to Ericsson. In addition to complementing ongoing Ericsson 6G-focused partnerships in Japan, it also highlights our commitment to work with all local stakeholders to deliver the benefits of open high-performing programmable networks.”

The new R&D investment in Japan will focus on high-performing, low-latency, and large data-capacity networks, which are essential for driving forward new business use cases, including AI. By working closely with local ecosystem suppliers and partners, the new R&D capabilities will enhance Japan’s digital infrastructure and strengthen Ericsson’s global network.

Ekholm also noted: “The race for digitalization is a global competition, and high-performing programmable 5G networks will be instrumental for Japan. At Ericsson, we’re committed to strengthening collaborations to industrialize an Open RAN-ready network, ensuring Japan’s digital future is bright and prosperous.”

Ericsson, which invests around USD 5 billion annually in global R&D, continues to lead in 5G and next-generation technology development. The company has been operating in Japan since 1985, with offices in Tokyo, Yokohama, and Sendai. It currently employs over 1,000 people in the country.

As part of its commitment to advancing Japan’s technology ecosystem, Ericsson is also collaborating on 6G research with the Yokohama National University and the University of Electro-Communications. Per Narvinger, Executive Vice President and Head of Ericsson Networks, highlighted the long-standing importance of Japan’s market, saying: “Japan has a rich technology ecosystem and a strong talent pool, which is conducive to building a strong R&D presence in the country.”

This investment and collaboration further solidify Ericsson's commitment to supporting Japan’s role in global digitalization and ensuring the nation remains at the forefront of technological advancements.
