Canadian Partnership to Support Heavy Water Industry

13 May 2025  by world nuclear news
Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) has entered a strategic partnership with Isowater Corporation to enhance the latter’s heavy water refinement capabilities, addressing rising global demand for heavy water in nuclear and non-nuclear industries. The collaboration leverages CNL’s expertise and Atomic Energy of Canada Limited’s (AECL) intellectual property to support Isowater, a subsidiary of KEY DH Technologies Inc Group.

CNL is considered to be a world leader in heavy water technology

CNL will provide Isowater with isotope exchange catalyst technologies and expert support to improve its deuterium refining processes. This partnership aims to deliver higher-purity heavy water, enabling Isowater to meet the needs of non-nuclear sectors, including electronics, health sciences, semiconductors, OLED displays, and environmental sciences. Heavy water, which contains deuterium instead of standard hydrogen, serves as a moderator and coolant in pressurized heavy water reactors like Candu and is increasingly valued in these diverse markets.

Jack Craig, CNL President and CEO, highlighted the growing interest in heavy water applications, stating: “By applying our expertise and technologies, built through more than 60 years of scientific research in hydrogen isotope management, we believe that CNL can help Isowater grow and improve its heavy water refining capabilities. We look forward to working with them under the terms of our new agreement.”

Andrew Stuart, chairman of KEY, emphasized the partnership’s significance, noting: “CNL, Canada’s premier science and technology laboratory, offers world-class technology and expertise that support the path to global success of organisations like ours.” He added that the collaboration builds on a decade-long relationship with CNL and AECL, contributing to a more than 10% annual growth rate in global deuterium oxide use in high-tech and life sciences industries.

AECL President and CEO Fred Dermarkar expressed support for the agreement, stating: “AECL is pleased to see the signing of this agreement, which makes use of our extensive intellectual property in heavy water production and refinement.” He further noted: “This agreement would not be possible without the innovative collaboration between the federal government and the private sector.”

CNL, a leader in heavy water technology with over 60 years of experience, manages AECL’s sites and advances nuclear science under its mandate. The partnership with Isowater strengthens Canada’s position in the global heavy water market, supporting both economic growth and innovation across multiple industries.
