Construction Contract Awarded for Darlington SMR

12 May 2025  by world nuclear news
Aecon Kiewit Nuclear Partners has secured a construction contract for the execution phase of Ontario Power Generation’s Darlington New Nuclear Project, following provincial approval on Thursday. The project, featuring a GE Hitachi BWRX-300 small modular reactor (SMR), marks North America’s first grid-scale SMR. Aecon, leading the partnership with Kiewit Nuclear Canada, noted that its portion of the contract is valued at approximately CAD1.3 billion (USD934 million).

The project operates under an Integrated Project Delivery model, with Aecon Kiewit Nuclear Partners collaborating with Ontario Power Generation, GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy, and AtkinsRéalis. Aecon’s responsibilities include project management, construction planning, and execution, with commercial operation targeted for 2030. The Darlington New Nuclear Project, valued at CAD20.9 billion (USD15 billion), is Ontario’s first new nuclear build in over 30 years.

Jean-Louis Servranckx, Aecon Group President and CEO, stated: “OPG’s Darlington New Nuclear Project is a trailblazing undertaking – leading the way in delivering the next generation of nuclear plants across North America and internationally.”

Aecon also plays a significant role in Ontario’s nuclear sector, leading construction for refurbishment projects at Ontario Power Generation’s Darlington and Pickering sites and Bruce Power’s Major Component Replacement program. The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission granted a Licence to Construct for the first of four planned BWRX-300 reactors at Darlington in April, enabling the project to advance.

Site preparation for the Darlington New Nuclear Project began in autumn 2022, with key components, such as the reactor pressure vessel, already procured. The project represents a significant step in expanding clean energy infrastructure, leveraging advanced SMR technology to meet future energy demands. By integrating collaborative project management and innovative reactor design, the initiative aims to set a benchmark for nuclear energy development in North America and beyond.
