Duke Energy Taps GE Vernova for Gas Turbine Partnership

28 Apr 2025  by power engineering
Duke Energy and GE Vernova have entered into a partnership to supply natural gas turbines and related equipment to address increasing energy demands driven by advanced manufacturing, data centers, and population growth. The agreement, announced recently, supports Duke Energy’s integrated resource plans and includes plans for up to eleven 7HA gas turbines, in addition to eight previously secured units.

The collaboration aims to ensure a reliable energy supply for Duke Energy’s service territories. Harry Sideris, Duke Energy’s president and CEO, stated: “As we continue to experience unprecedented growth in our service territories, securing the necessary materials to build critical infrastructure and meet the energy demand is integral to delivering value for our customers and other stakeholders.” The partnership aligns with Duke Energy’s strategy to modernize its energy infrastructure.

GE Vernova is expanding its manufacturing capabilities to meet rising demand for gas turbines. The company recently invested nearly $300 million in its Greenville, South Carolina facility as part of a $600 million commitment to U.S. manufacturing over the next two years. This investment introduces lean manufacturing lines to enhance production efficiency and supplier capacity. In March, GE Vernova acquired Woodward’s heavy-duty gas turbine combustion parts business, also based in Greenville, further strengthening its operations.

In the first quarter of 2025, GE Vernova’s gas power segment saw equipment orders increase by over 30%, driven by 7 gigawatts (GW) of new gas turbine orders and an additional 7 GW in slot reservation agreements. The company’s current gas turbine backlog stands at 29 GW, with 21 GW in reservations expected to convert into future orders as project sites and engineering, procurement, and construction contracts are finalized.

GE Vernova executives informed investors that the company anticipates shipping over 10 GW of gas turbine equipment and securing contracts for more than double that amount in 2025. By year-end, GE Vernova expects its combined backlog and reservation agreements to exceed 60 GW. The executives stated: “The company expect to ship over 10GW of gas turbine equipment and ink contracts for more than twice that amount during the remainder of 2025.”

This partnership supports Duke Energy’s efforts to meet growing energy needs while advancing GE Vernova’s manufacturing capabilities. By combining reliable equipment supply with innovative production processes, the collaboration contributes to a stable and efficient energy infrastructure, addressing the demands of expanding industries and communities.
