RIC Energy and Copsesa Collaborate on Green Hydrogen Production Plant Project

10 May 2023  by energynews

The mayor of Torrelavega, Javier López Estrada, has announced a joint project between RIC Energy and Copsesa to set up a green hydrogen production plant and derivatives on the Sniace land in Torrelavega, Spain.

The project is being developed to acquire the land through public auction. The project aims to create a green hydrogen plant with an electrolysis capacity of 500 megawatts expandable with an investment of about 750 million euros and employment for about 250 people.

The development of this project is part of the transition to a cleaner, more sustainable energy economy, with hydrogen being a key focus for governments and companies worldwide. The use of hydrogen as a fuel source has the potential to reduce carbon emissions significantly.

RIC Energy, which specializes in photovoltaic projects, intends to bid for the purchase of the Sniace land, which has been vacant since 2020 when the factory closed. The green hydrogen plant will be a major milestone in the development of Torrelavega’s industrial sector, positioning the city as a hub for sustainable energy.

The green hydrogen production plant and derivatives project is a collaborative effort between the City Council, the Ministry of Industry, RIC Energy, and Copsesa. López Estrada has stated that the city council and the Ministry of Industry have been working on this project since October 2022 to prove its viability.

The project is still in the early stages, and there are potential challenges to be faced. One of these challenges is the availability of sufficient renewable energy to power the plant. Another challenge is the cost of building and operating the plant, which could be a significant barrier to the project’s success.

The mayor of Torrelavega, Javier López Estrada, has expressed his optimism about the project’s potential to transform the city’s industrial landscape. He considers the green hydrogen production plant and derivatives project to be a significant milestone for the city’s future, a key industrial project, and an emblematic venture that will position Torrelavega as a leader in sustainable energy.

In conclusion, the green hydrogen production plant and derivatives project is a step in the right direction towards a more sustainable energy economy, reducing carbon emissions, and promoting green jobs. It is an exciting project that could transform Torrelavega’s industrial sector, creating employment opportunities and positioning the city as a hub for sustainable energy.
