Spanish clean energy company Iberdrola has signed a deal with the Port of Rotterdam to develop a hydrogen supply chain to cater for demand in the Netherlands and northwest Europe, as well as producing green hydrogen at the port.

Iberdola says the Netherlands is “a key market to develop the green hydrogen economy since it is Europe’s second largest consumer of hydrogen after Germany”.

It also believes the Port of Rotterdam is “poised to become Europe’s hydrogen hub” thanks to preliminary work on infrastructure and services for facilitating hydrogen flows.

The memorandum of understanding between Iberdrola and the port includes the potential establishment of a supply chain to ship hydrogen and other derivatives produced by Iberdrola to Rotterdam, where it would be distributed to off-takers in the Netherlands as well as Belgium and Germany.

In a statement, Iberdola added: “Given the role of Rotterdam as a main port for the distribution and production of new fuels and feedstocks, Iberdrola is interested to also develop an electrolyzer in the Rotterdam Industrial Cluster for additional local production of green hydrogen.”
