JERA, Kyushu Electric Power, Chugoku Electric Power, Shikoku Electric Power, and Tohoku Electric Power entered a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to look into the potential of collaborating for the adoption of hydrogen and ammonia as a fuel for power generation.

In a statement, JERA said the signatories plan to establish and expand supply chains for hydrogen and ammonia for fuel which they aim to use for their thermal power plants as they do not emit carbon dioxide during combustion.

Under the MOU, they aim to facilitate joint procurement that will reduce hydrogen and ammonia procurement costs for domestic power plants. They also plan to establish transportation and storage methods for the two.

The companies will also work on gaining policy support, develop rules related to hydrogen and ammonia, and discuss potential collaborative projects related to the introduction of hydrogen and ammonia in the country.

Hydrogen and ammonia are seen to replace fossil fuels, JERA said.
