Rusatom Overseas and Air Liquide announced the completion of a feasibility study for the construction of a hydrogen production complex on Sakhalin Island and presented the results at a meeting with the Government of the Sakhalin Region.

Based on the positive results of the feasibility study, RAOS and Air Liquide are preparing for the next stage of the project - FEED (front end engineering design).

The Government of the Sakhalin Region expressed its support for the project and highlighted its importance for the development of the region.

The project is being carried out within the framework of a memorandum of understanding signed by the parties in April 2021.

The construction of a hydrogen production complex will become part of a large-scale project for the creation and development of a hydrogen cluster in the Sakhalin Region and lay the foundation for organizing an effective hydrogen supply chain on the island to foreign markets and local consumers in the energy, transport and industry sectors.

“The project for the production of low-carbon hydrogen on Sakhalin Island by steam reforming of methane using environmentally friendly technologies for capturing CO2 emissions is developing successfully. Together with our partners, we have completed the first fundamental stage of the future complex. This is a very important project for our region, and we look forward to its successful implementation,” said Valery Limarenko, Governor of the Sakhalin Region.

“We see that many companies from the countries of the Asia-Pacific region pay great attention to the development of the hydrogen economy and are interested in importing low-carbon hydrogen from Russia, we are already negotiating with potential partners in Japan and the Republic of Korea to launch an international supply chain for low-carbon hydrogen from 2025 ”, - said Evgeny Pakermanov, President of JSC Rusatom Overseas.
