Siemens Gamesa Deal To Enter Vietnam Offshore Wind

22 Jul 2019

Turbine OEM to deploy adapted versions of 4.5MW onshore machines at nearshore project. Siemens Gamesa has sealed a 32MW offshore wind deal in Vietnam that will see a custom-adapted version of its onshore turbines deployed at a nearshore project.

The turbine OEM will supply seven of its SG 4.5-145 turbines for the No. 5 Thanh Hai 1 project being developed by local group Tan Hoan Cau 2-5km off Vietnam’s Ben Tre province.

Siemens Gamesa has a conditional deal to replicate the order for the second phase of the project said the Spanish-German manufacturer, marking its first foray into the Vietnamese offshore wind sector.

The OEM said its experience in offshore wind allowed it to “adapt our onshore turbines to meet this project’s requirements and optimise project economics for the customer”.

The group revealed it is also “coordinating the discussions with the financing parties, which includes at this stage the Danish Export Credit Agency, an international bank and one of Vietnam’s largest banks”.

Vietnam, which had less than 200MW of wind in place late last year, has an official target of 800MW by 2020 and 7GW by 2030.

Offshore wind is expected to play a big role in the country’s future plans. The developer leading a planned 3.4GW mega-project off the country’ southern coast this week told Recharge it has applied for adoption in Vietnam’s national energy strategy.
