OPG Completes Unit 2 Construction for Darlington Refurbishment Project

30 Mar 2020  by Power-Technology

Electricity generating company Ontario Power Generation (OPG) has completed the construction of Darlington Nuclear Generating Station’s Unit 2 reactor along with its project partners and vendors.

The completion of Unit 2 is part of the Darlington Refurbishment project, which is said to be one of the largest clean energy projects in Canada. It will extend the station’s life by 30 more years.

OPG president and CEO Ken Hartwick said: “On behalf of all OPG employees, project partners and vendors, I want to thank our refurbishment team on completing the final steps of construction on Unit 2 under unprecedented and extraordinary circumstances.

“The project team continued to work safely and diligently while managing changes required as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.”

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the company will continue to operate Darlington Nuclear Generating Station’s Unit 3 reactor.

However, it will temporarily delay the refurbishment plans of the unit, which was originally planned to start in May.

OPG noted that the Unit 3 team will begin the restart process at an appropriate date later.
