German solar market witnesses 30% growth in 2019

05 Jan 2020  by Renewables Now
The German solar market experienced a 30% expansion in the past year with almost 4 GW of newly commissioned capacity, shows initial data by domestic solar industry association BSW.

The industry body explained the growth with the falling prices of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems and increased power prices. Solar investment has been further spurred by the wider climate debate and the increased deployment of electromobility.

In spite of the 2019 growth, more needs to be done to enable the country to achieve its climate goals.

"Without a much faster expansion of renewable energies, there would be a power generation gap as a result of the nuclear and coal phase-out in the first half of the 2020s," said BSW’s managing director Carsten Kornig, adding that this gap could be closed if the country triples the pace of its renewables expansion.
