KazMunayGas launches first full-cycle green hydrogen production complex in Kazakhstan

21 May 2026

KMG Engineering, a subsidiary of KazMunayGas (KMG), has launched a full-cycle pilot project to generate green hydrogen in Atyrau, KMG's press service reported.

"The project began in June 2025 with the installation of a solar power plant consisting of 336 modules, 200 kW. A containerized electrolysis unit has been launched, providing a full cycle from solar energy generation to hydrogen production and its subsequent use for heating and power supply," the press service said.

KMG Engineering plans to test various solutions for gas storage, transportation, and combined use in hybrid systems at the KMG Engineering site, KMG noted.

Furthermore, the research team at the hydrogen technologies research laboratory at the Atyrau branch of KMG Engineering has created the first samples of titanium-iron alloys for hydrogen storage.

The developed metal hydrides allow hydrogen to be stored at room temperature.

"This renders hydrogen transportation safer and cheaper, eliminating complex cooling and ultra-high pressure. Overall, when scaled up, the new technology promises to reduce costs substantially and significantly simplify the use of green hydrogen. The research results have received international recognition," according to the press release.

KazMunayGas is Kazakhstan's national operator for hydrocarbon exploration, production, processing, and transportation, representing the state's interests in the oil and gas industry.
