Hungary and Slovakia agree to build fuel pipeline

18 Mar 2026

Hungary and Slovakia signed an agreement in Brussels on March 16 to construct an oil products pipeline connecting refineries owned by MOL Group in the two countries for the transportation of gasoline, diesel, and other petroleum products.

The Slovak Ministry of Economy stated that the pipeline, stretching 127 kilometers with an annual transportation capacity of 1.5 million tons, is planned to be completed in the first half of 2027. It will link the Slovnaft refinery in Bratislava, Slovakia, with the Danube refinery in Szazhalombatta, Hungary.

Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto pointed out that the pipeline will further enhance the security of Hungary's energy supply, especially its diesel supply. The Slovak Ministry of Economy emphasized that recent regional oil supply disruptions have exposed the vulnerability of energy infrastructure, and the construction of this pipeline will help improve fuel logistics and enhance supply security in the two countries.

As the only two EU member states still importing Russian oil, Hungary and Slovakia oppose the EU's plan to end such imports next year. Meanwhile, they are actively seeking to diversify their crude oil supply and transportation routes, including through pipelines from Croatia.
