BYD Further Improves Fifth-Generation DM Hybrid Tech With Fuel Consumption Lowered to 2.6l/100KM

On August 5, BYD announced an upgrade to its fifth-generation DM (Dual Mode) hybrid technology, achieving a new standard in fuel efficiency. The updated system, tested under NEDC conditions, reduces fuel consumption in low battery states by 10%, reaching 2.6 liters per 100 kilometers, as certified by the National Automobile Quality Inspection and Testing Center in Guangdong.

BYD first introduced its fifth-generation DM hybrid technology on May 28, 2024, with an initial fuel consumption rate of 2.9L/100km, marking what the company called the "2-liter era" for plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs). The latest improvement stems from advancements in software-hardware integration, building on optimized components like the engine, electric drive system, and domain control units. BYD noted that further efficiency gains required innovative coordination between these elements.

The upgrade is driven by three key factors. First, BYD leverages extensive data from over 1.5 million vehicles sold with the fifth-generation DM technology, generating 2.8 billion kilometers of driving data monthly across more than 1.8 million real-world conditions. Second, the company employs advanced AI models to enhance engine and electric drive performance, optimizing hybrid control strategies. Third, these AI models are refined using data from over 1.8 million operating scenarios, enabling tailored fuel-saving approaches for diverse driving conditions.

For example, BYD’s Qin L DM-i and Seal 06 DM-i models can travel 2,100 kilometers on a full tank and battery. With the upgraded system, these vehicles save an additional 0.3 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers, totaling 6.3 liters over their full range. At current fuel prices for 92-octane gasoline in China, approximately 7 to 8 yuan per liter, this translates to savings of 40 to 50 yuan per tank.

A BYD representative stated: “This upgrade marks a significant step in our commitment to efficiency and sustainability, ensuring our hybrid technology remains at the forefront of innovation.” The company confirmed that the enhanced fuel efficiency strategy will be delivered to all fifth-generation DM hybrid vehicles through over-the-air updates, allowing current owners to benefit without hardware modifications.

This development underscores BYD’s focus on advancing hybrid technology through data-driven innovation and AI, enhancing vehicle efficiency while supporting sustainable transportation solutions for consumers.
