Ameresco and Republic Services Launch Another RNG Facility in Illinois

04 Aug 2025  by Biomass Magazine
On July 29, 2025, Ameresco Inc., a prominent energy solutions provider, announced the successful commercial operation of a renewable natural gas (RNG) facility at the County Landfill in Dixon, Illinois. This project, developed in partnership with Republic Services, a leader in environmental services, marks their 15th joint renewable energy facility, with additional projects in development, permitting, and construction phases.

The Lee County facility began injecting RNG into a natural gas transmission pipeline in late June 2025. It processes naturally occurring landfill gas into pipeline-quality RNG, a low-carbon fuel that reduces reliance on fossil fuels. The facility is designed to handle 4,500 standard cubic feet per minute of raw landfill gas, converting what was previously flared into a sustainable energy resource.

Ameresco highlighted the environmental benefits, stating: “The facility will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by more than 61,000 metric tons per year, equivalent to eliminating emissions from over 70,000,000 gallons of gasoline consumption or approximately 1,500,000 barrels of oil.” This reduction supports cleaner energy practices and contributes to environmental sustainability by transforming waste into a valuable resource.

The collaboration between Ameresco and Republic Services reflects a shared commitment to advancing renewable energy solutions. By capturing and processing landfill gas, the facility not only generates a low-carbon fuel but also mitigates the environmental impact of waste. The project aligns with broader efforts to promote sustainable energy practices and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Located in Dixon, Illinois, the Lee County facility strengthens local energy infrastructure while supporting environmental goals. The partnership’s ongoing projects indicate a continued focus on expanding renewable energy capacity across various regions, contributing to a cleaner and more sustainable energy future.
