City of Hastings Nebraska Approves 25-Year RNG Agreement With Newcarbon

19 May 2025  by Biomass Magazine
NewCarbon has entered a 25-year partnership with Hastings, Nebraska, to transform methane emissions from the Hastings Sanitary Landfill into renewable natural gas (RNG). The initiative will capture methane produced by decomposing organic waste, process it into pipeline-quality RNG, and feed it into a nearby natural gas pipeline. This allows the gas to be used like conventional natural gas, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and converting waste into a locally produced energy resource.

With an investment of approximately $20 million, NewCarbon will fund the development of the RNG facility, sparing Hastings the expense of installing a methane capture system. This enables the city to meet future environmental regulations without burdening taxpayers. The project is also projected to generate up to $2 million in royalty revenue for Hastings over the 25-year period, providing a financial benefit to the community.

Omar Khayum, CEO of NewCarbon, stated: “We are delighted to be partnering with the City of Hastings on this project. Together, we’re not only reducing methane emissions but transforming a wasted resource into clean, renewable energy that benefits the entire community. Our turnkey approach makes it easy for communities like Hastings to lower their carbon footprint and focus on what they do best, while we handle the rest.” This reflects the company’s commitment to sustainable energy solutions that support local economies.

Mayor Jay Beckby of Hastings expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration, saying: “The City of Hastings is proud to partner with NewCarbon on this long-term agreement. This project is a win-win for our community – it allows us to meet environmental goals and turn waste into renewable energy, all while avoiding any new costs to taxpayers and generating additional revenue for the city. Fiscal responsibility is a top priority for me, and this partnership is a great example of how we can make smart investments that benefit Hastings today and for generations to come.” The agreement aligns with the city’s goals of environmental and financial stewardship.

Construction of the RNG facility is scheduled to begin in late 2027, with operations expected to commence by mid-2029. This timeline ensures thorough planning and execution to deliver a reliable, sustainable energy solution for Hastings. The project underscores a shared commitment to environmental responsibility and economic benefits, positioning Hastings as a model for innovative waste-to-energy initiatives.
