Shanxi, China’s leading coal-producing province, reported a raw coal output of approximately 652 million tonnes in the first half of 2025, marking a 10.1 percent increase compared to the same period in the previous year, according to the provincial statistics bureau. As the nation’s largest coal-producing region, Shanxi contributed around 27 percent of China’s total coal output during this period.

The province has focused on advancing sustainable practices within its coal industry, emphasizing clean and low-carbon development. Efforts have centered on diversifying coal utilization to support a more efficient and environmentally responsible approach. “Shanxi is committed to transforming the coal industry into a high-end, intelligent, and green sector,” a spokesperson from the provincial statistics bureau stated, highlighting the region’s dedication to modernizing its operations.

By the end of 2024, Shanxi had established 55 pilot and demonstration mines for green mining, showcasing innovative techniques to reduce environmental impact. Additionally, 120 coal mines in the province had adopted pillarless mining technology, which enhances efficiency and minimizes resource waste. These advancements reflect Shanxi’s ongoing efforts to integrate cutting-edge technologies and sustainable practices into its coal production processes.

The increase in coal output aligns with Shanxi’s role as a key supplier in China’s energy sector, supporting both industrial and energy needs. The province’s focus on intelligent mining technologies has improved operational efficiency, while green initiatives aim to balance economic growth with environmental stewardship. These efforts ensure that Shanxi remains a vital contributor to the national energy landscape while addressing global demands for cleaner energy solutions.

Shanxi’s transformation of its coal industry emphasizes long-term sustainability. By investing in green mining and advanced technologies, the province is positioning itself as a leader in modern coal production. The adoption of pillarless mining and the development of green mines demonstrate a commitment to reducing the environmental footprint of coal extraction while maintaining high productivity levels. These initiatives are expected to support the region’s economic development and contribute to a more sustainable energy future.
