Vodafone Launches First 5G Advertising Column in Stuttgart

21 Jul 2025  by thefastmode
On July 21, 2025, Vodafone and the city of Stuttgart launched Baden-Württemberg’s first 5G-enabled advertising column at Feuerseeplatz, marking a significant step in enhancing the city’s digital infrastructure. Following successful technical trials, the column now provides high-speed 5G connectivity, offering mobile users faster downloads and reliable network performance, even in busy areas. Vodafone plans to equip five additional advertising columns with 5G technology by the end of 2025 and aims to convert up to 100 columns into mobile communication hubs over the coming years, improving coverage and network stability across Stuttgart’s bustling streets.

The 5G advertising column integrates three antennas and advanced technology, supplied by Swedish manufacturer Ericsson, within its 4.79-meter-high, 1.62-meter-wide basilica-shaped structure. This setup delivers network speeds of up to 500 megabits per second within a 400-meter radius, connected to the internet via fiber optics. The initiative addresses the challenge of finding new urban locations for 5G infrastructure, as traditional rooftop sites are often limited in city centers. Each 5G column will receive a site certificate from Germany’s Federal Network Agency to ensure safe operation, aligning with the standards of Vodafone’s 235 existing mobile base stations in Stuttgart.

Dr. Frank Nopper, Mayor of Stuttgart, stated: “The advertising column is a well-established element of our street furniture, which is now being enhanced and complemented by smart technology. It’s a solution that not only accelerates the expansion of the mobile network, but also makes optimal use of the limited space in the city.” He emphasized Stuttgart’s role as a leader in digital infrastructure innovation.

The project is a collaboration with Ilg-Außenwerbung, a Stuttgart-based company managing the city’s 600 traditional advertising columns since 2000. Kai Ilg, Managing Director of Ilg Outdoor Advertising, noted: “ILG Outdoor Advertising provided the locations and developed the modern ‘Basilika’ advertising column model, which integrates the technology and the 5G antennas. We are therefore pleased to be able to make an important contribution to the introduction of the 5G future network in Stuttgart together with our partners in Stuttgart.”

The next three 5G advertising columns are planned for the Mercedes-Benz Museum, MHP Arena Stuttgart, and Bad Cannstatt train station. This initiative enhances mobile connectivity while blending seamlessly with the city’s urban landscape, supporting Stuttgart’s commitment to advancing digital infrastructure and sustainable urban development.
