Portus Expands Munich Data Centre Campus With AI-Ready, 5.5MW Facility

09 May 2025  by capacitymedia
Portus Data Centers has announced plans to expand its Munich campus with a new 5.5MW colocation facility named MUC2. This Tier III+ carrier-neutral data center will add 2,200 square meters of white space, increasing the campus’s total IT load to 7MW. Construction has begun, with the initial capacity expected to be operational by late 2026.

The MUC2 facility is designed to support a range of workloads, from standard enterprise applications to high-density AI and high-performance computing (HPC) environments. It features an “AI native” reference architecture developed by Portus, ensuring flexibility for advanced technological demands. The data center will comply fully with Germany’s Energy Efficiency Act (EnEfG), operate on 100% renewable energy, and aim for a power usage effectiveness (PUE) of 1.2 or lower.

Marco Kain, managing director at Portus Munich, stated: “With the investment and expansion at the Munich site, we are not only setting technological but also ecological standards. Our new data center is more than just a building, it is a clear commitment to digital sovereignty, sustainability and innovative strength in Germany.”

Strategically located near Germany’s highest GDP concentration zone, the Munich campus serves regional businesses and international service providers needing scalable, compliant, and low-latency digital infrastructure. The expansion aligns with Portus’s growth strategy in the DACH region, addressing rising demand for data center capacity.

Adriaan Oosthoek, chairman of Portus, said: “This development is a key milestone in our buy-and-build growth strategy for the DACH region. We will continue to add capacity as needed to meet growing demand.” The project reinforces Portus’s commitment to enhancing digital infrastructure while prioritizing sustainability and efficiency.

Mercury Construction has been selected to build the MUC2 facility. Eoghan Cremin, operations director at Mercury, noted: “We are proud to continue our partnership with Portus and bring our experience and innovation to the next phase of this development.” The collaboration ensures the project leverages expertise in constructing advanced data centers.

The MUC2 facility will support Germany’s digital economy by providing robust infrastructure for enterprise and AI-driven applications. Its focus on renewable energy and energy efficiency aligns with environmental goals, while its strategic location enhances connectivity for businesses. This expansion strengthens Munich’s position as a hub for innovative and sustainable data center solutions, meeting the needs of a rapidly evolving digital landscape.
