Key High-Speed Rail Link Opens in SW China

On June 27, 2025, a high-speed railway section in Chongqing Municipality, southwest China, began operations, marking a significant milestone in connecting the country’s inland regions with its southeastern coast. The 242-kilometer segment, linking Chongqing East Railway Station to Qianjiang Railway Station, is part of the broader Chongqing-Xiamen high-speed railway project. Construction started in May 2020, and the line supports trains traveling at speeds up to 350 kilometers per hour, with a daily capacity of 54 trains.

This newly opened section forms a critical link between Chongqing and Changsha, the capital of Hunan Province, reducing travel time and fostering stronger connections between these major regional hubs. The Chongqing-Xiamen railway is designed to serve as a vital transportation corridor, integrating southwest China with the southeastern coastal areas.

“The just-completed Chongqing to Changsha link, combined with the already operational Ganzhou to Xiamen section and the under-construction Changsha to Ganzhou section, will form the Chongqing-Xiamen high-speed rail corridor,” said Liu Te, a staff member at China State Railway Group Co., Ltd., responsible for infrastructure construction. The full route, once completed, will connect Chongqing to Xiamen, a coastal city in Fujian Province, via Ganzhou in Jiangxi Province.

The operational segment enhances regional connectivity, supporting economic and social exchanges by streamlining travel. Analysts note that the railway’s completion strengthens ties between key city clusters, facilitating efficient movement of people and resources. The high-speed line is expected to play a significant role in boosting regional development while providing a reliable and fast transport option.

As construction progresses on the remaining sections, the Chongqing-Xiamen railway will further integrate China’s inland and coastal regions, contributing to a robust national transportation network. This development underscores ongoing efforts to improve infrastructure and connectivity, supporting sustainable growth across diverse regions.
