Seaspan Picks Hudong-Zhonghua to Build 8,300 TEU Green Boxship Series

On May 20, 2025, Seaspan Corporation, a Hong Kong-based containership lessor, signed a letter of intent (LOI) with Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding, a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), to construct a series of 8,300 TEU containerships and an 18,600 cubic meter bunkering vessel. The agreement aims to enhance sustainable maritime transport solutions.

The signing ceremony coincided with several milestones at Hudong-Zhonghua’s shipyard. On the same day, the company named the LNG carrier Ocean Inspiration, launched two 174,000 cubic meter LNG carriers, conducted an undocking ceremony for another LNG carrier, and began construction on a 13,000 TEU dual-fuel containership for Pacific International Lines (PIL).

The 8,300 TEU containerships represent Hudong-Zhonghua’s latest design for medium-sized vessels, tailored for both feeder and ocean routes. According to CSSC, these ships are engineered for efficiency, incorporating green technologies to reduce energy consumption and emissions, aligning with global sustainability goals.

The 18,600 cubic meter bunkering vessel, described as the world’s largest V3.0 type, was independently developed by Hudong-Zhonghua. It features advanced technology for lower energy use and reduced emissions, offering improved environmental performance for maritime bunkering operations.

Seaspan Corporation also recently expanded its fleet by ordering six 11,400 TEU scrubber-fitted containerships from Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding (SWS) earlier in May 2025. These vessels are scheduled for delivery in 2027 and 2028, further strengthening Seaspan’s commitment to modernizing its fleet with environmentally conscious designs.

The collaboration between Seaspan and Hudong-Zhonghua underscores the growing demand for efficient and sustainable shipping solutions, supporting global trade and environmental objectives through innovative vessel designs.
