GenusPlus Wins $45M Contract for 100MW Merredin BESS in Australia

GenusPlus Group has secured an A$65 million ($45.13 million) contract from Atmos Renewables to design and construct the Merredin battery energy storage system (BESS) and associated substation works in Western Australia. The 100MW, four-hour capacity project will support grid stability and enhance energy security in the region’s electricity market.

The project will connect to Western Power’s transmission substation at the nearby Merredin terminal station.

The Merredin BESS, a joint venture between Atmos Renewables and Nomad Energy, received development approval in April 2024. Work is set to begin after Atmos Renewables issues a notice to proceed, expected in June or July 2025, pending financial closure. GenusPlus will oversee detailed design, procurement, installation, and civil works over an 18-month period, with completion targeted for early 2027. The project will employ 70 personnel and prioritize local content from Western Australia.

David Riches, GenusPlus managing director, stated: “Genus is pleased to be increasing its presence in the renewable market through its involvement in this flagship project, which is aimed at providing significant benefits to Western Australians. The award of this contract highlights the strength of our customer relationships and our reputation for reliable delivery, and the company looks forward to building on its relationship with Atmos Renewables.”

Located 7.5km southwest of Merredin, approximately 230km east of Perth in Western Australia’s wheatbelt region, the project is near the Great Eastern Highway and Bruce Rock Merredin Road, adjacent to the existing Merredin solar farm. Upon completion, it will connect to Western Power’s transmission substation at the nearby Merredin terminal station, reinforcing the region’s renewable energy infrastructure.

This contract follows GenusPlus’s earlier success in January 2025, when it won an A$270 million ($167 million) contract from Western Power for the Clean Energy Link, North Region project in Western Australia, further solidifying its role in the renewable energy sector.
