This battery, a key component of a larger project valued at NZD-186 million, will enable load-shifting between energy pricing periods, smooth out peak electricity demand, and provide greater resilience for the Northland region. Meridian plans to use this system to participate in the North Island electricity reserves market, further stabilizing the grid.
The project, initiated in the first quarter of 2023, is a collaboration with Saft, a unit of French energy giant TotalEnergies SE (EPA:TTE), for the technology. Alongside this, Meridian is also set to break ground on a 250,000-panel solar farm, expected to generate up to 230 GWh of annual electricity. This solar farm, with a projected commissioning date in early 2027, will significantly boost New Zealand’s renewable energy capabilities.
By integrating both the BESS and solar farm projects, Meridian Energy aims to strengthen its position in the renewable energy sector while ensuring a more reliable and sustainable energy supply.
