DHL to Buy Power From EnBW’s He Dreiht Offshore Wind Farm

DHL Group has entered a 10-year power purchase agreement with Energie Baden-Württemberg (EnBW) to source renewable energy, starting in 2026. The logistics company will procure 80 gigawatt-hours of electricity annually from the He Dreiht offshore wind farm in the German North Sea. This initiative supports DHL’s Strategy 2030 to become a leading sustainable logistics provider, aiming for zero logistics-related emissions by 2050.

With a total installed capacity of 960MW, He Dreiht can supply renewable energy to 1.1 million households.

The agreement ensures a steady supply of clean energy for DHL’s operations in Germany, covering 16% of its current annual electricity needs in the country. Anna Spinelli, DHL Group’s chief procurement officer, said: “The deal with EnBW is another important step on our path to net-zero greenhouse gas emissions in logistics by 2050. The long-term agreement with our energy partner ensures a reliable supply of electricity from renewable sources for our operations and contributes to supporting the energy transition.”

The He Dreiht wind farm, set to begin operations in stages and complete by spring 2026, is a significant project in Europe’s renewable energy landscape. With a capacity of 960MW, it will power approximately 1.1 million households using 64 Vestas V236-15 turbines, each generating 15MW. This marks the first commercial deployment of these advanced turbines. The project, one of Europe’s largest, operates without government subsidies, following EnBW’s successful Hohe See and Albatros wind farms, doubling its renewable energy capacity in the North Sea.

Matthias Obert, EnBW’s executive director of trading, stated: “We are delighted to support DHL Group on its journey towards zero-emission logistics. This partnership underscores our position as a major provider of sustainable energy across Europe.” The collaboration highlights both companies’ commitment to advancing renewable energy and fostering sustainable practices through strategic partnerships.
