Oneka Technologies' wave energy-drive desalination platform
The project, supported in part by funding from the California Department of Water Resources, is now moving into the deployment phase. Oneka’s technology harnesses wave energy to produce freshwater without relying on the grid or generating greenhouse gas emissions. This initiative marks the first seawater desalination pilot to successfully complete the CEQA process since California updated its regulations in 2015.
Oneka Technologies stated on social media: “This approval represents a major milestone in advancing towards the deployment of our wave-powered desalination technology off the California coast. It is particularly significant as it marks the first seawater desalination pilot project to successfully complete the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) process since the adoption of updated regulations in 2015. We’re grateful for the support and thoughtful input from the community and city officials throughout this process, and we look forward to bringing sustainable freshwater solutions in Fort Bragg.”
In a related development, Oneka signed a memorandum of understanding with Chile-based Asfalcom in December 2024 to deploy its wave-powered desalination technology at Asfalcom’s production facility in Chile. This agreement represents the first application of such technology for industrial water users in South America. Additionally, in April 2023, Oneka established a subsidiary in Chile following a successful demonstration of its wave-powered desalination system in the region.
The Fort Bragg project underscores Oneka’s commitment to sustainable water solutions, leveraging natural wave energy to address freshwater needs. The company’s progress in California and Chile highlights its growing role in advancing eco-friendly desalination technologies globally.
