Carnegie Clean Energy has announced that its subsidiaries, CETO Wave Energy Ireland and Carnegie Technologies Spain, have signed a contract with the Biscay Marine Energy Platform (BiMEP) to install and test CETO wave energy technology at BiMEP’s site in the Basque Country, Spain, as part of the ACHIEVE programme.

BiMEP Offshore Test Site: CETO will be deployed at a site between SAITEC’s DemoSATH offshore wind turbine (back left) and Tecnalia’s HarshLab

The agreement, following a prior Berth Reservation Agreement, finalizes terms for the installation, operation, and decommissioning of CETO technology at BiMEP over a two-year period. BiMEP will provide essential infrastructure, including offshore berth mooring, submarine power cables, subsea electrical connectors, and fiber optic cables, as well as onshore facilities like an electrical substation, power lines, and office space. These resources will enable CETO to generate and deliver electricity to the grid.

BiMEP is currently upgrading its site, which involves removing legacy equipment and replacing the electrical connector at the CETO deployment site. Carnegie’s subsidiaries will gain access to the site once these upgrades are complete. The contract also includes collaboration with BiMEP under the RENMARINAS DEMOS programme, supporting activities such as knowledge sharing, wave data collection, and environmental surveys.

The CETO deployment at BiMEP is a significant milestone in Carnegie’s commercialization strategy, aiming to achieve key technical and commercial outcomes. Carnegie CEO Jonathan Fiévez stated: “BiMEP provides established, world-class facilities, a supportive and collaborative team and challenging sea states. This combination is precisely why we’ve chosen to deploy CETO at BiMEP and we look forward to CETO demonstrating its performance and reliability at the site.”

Miguel Santos-Herran, Project Manager for the ACHIEVE programme, added: “We are pleased to solidify our commitment to continued work in the Basque Country. Following the recent establishment of our offices in the Basque Country, we are excited to progress to the next phase, involving the upcoming installation of wave buoys, site works, and pre-installation activities, leading to the deployment of CETO.”

The ACHIEVE programme has received funding from the EuropeWave PCP programme, RENMARINAS DEMOS programme, and Ente Vasco de la Energia (EVE), the Basque Energy Agency. This collaboration underscores efforts to advance renewable energy solutions, with CETO’s deployment expected to contribute to the development of sustainable wave energy technologies in the region.
