India’s Hygenco Breaks Ground on Green Ammonia Facility in Odisha

10 Jun 2025  by offshore energy
Hygenco Green Energies, an Indian developer of hydrogen and ammonia projects, has started construction on a green ammonia plant at Gopalpur Industrial Park in Odisha, India. The first phase of the project, expected to produce 600 tonnes per day, is set to commence commercial operations in 2027. The second phase, planned for early 2028, will double production, with the facility ultimately reaching a capacity of 1.1 million tonnes per annum.

In June 2024, Hygenco signed a term sheet with Swiss-based Ameropa to explore supplying green ammonia from the Odisha plant to markets in Europe and Asia. This initiative aligns with the company’s broader investment strategy, which includes $2.5 billion for green hydrogen and ammonia projects over the next three years. The Odisha project follows the launch of Hygenco’s megawatt-scale green hydrogen plant in Hisar in 2024.

At the start of 2025, Hygenco received pre-certification for renewable fuel of non-biological origin (RFNBO) from Bureau Veritas South Asia Region under the CertifHy scheme, recognized by the European Commission. This certification enables the company to supply green ammonia to end-users across the European Union, supporting the global transition to sustainable, low-carbon energy solutions.

Hygenco’s efforts in Odisha strengthen its portfolio of green hydrogen and ammonia projects across India, contributing to the region’s renewable energy development and global sustainability goals. The company’s focus on scalable, eco-friendly solutions positions it to meet growing demand for clean energy in both domestic and international markets.
