Shandong Ocean Shipping Group, a maritime logistics arm of Shandong Port Group, is expanding its dry bulk fleet by commissioning two new vessels from Hengli Shipbuilding in Dalian, China. The agreement, valued at CNY548 million (approximately $76 million), involves the construction of two 95,500 deadweight tonnage (dwt) bulk carriers, with delivery expected in 2027.

The decision to partner with a domestic shipyard reflects Shandong Ocean Shipping Group’s strategy to strengthen its fleet capacity using local expertise. Hengli Shipbuilding, known for its growing presence in the shipbuilding industry, has secured several bulk carrier contracts in recent years, particularly in the kamsarmax segment, which aligns with the specifications of these new vessels.

The newbuilds are designed to enhance the group’s ability to meet rising demand for dry bulk transport, supporting efficient maritime logistics operations. By investing in modern, high-capacity vessels, Shandong Ocean Shipping Group aims to improve its service offerings and maintain competitiveness in the global shipping market.

A spokesperson for Shandong Ocean Shipping Group stated: “This partnership with Hengli Shipbuilding underscores our commitment to leveraging domestic innovation to expand our fleet. The new vessels will enhance our operational efficiency and support our long-term growth objectives.” The collaboration highlights the trust placed in Hengli’s shipbuilding capabilities to deliver reliable, high-quality vessels.

Hengli Shipbuilding’s Dalian yard has become a key player in the construction of bulk carriers, benefiting from steady demand for newbuilds. The yard’s expertise in producing kamsarmax vessels, which are optimized for flexibility and efficiency, positions it well to meet the needs of clients like Shandong Ocean Shipping Group. The $76 million contract further solidifies Hengli’s reputation as a preferred shipbuilder in the domestic market.

The project is expected to contribute to the regional economy in Dalian by supporting jobs and supply chains tied to shipbuilding. It also aligns with broader industry trends toward modernizing fleets to meet environmental and operational standards, ensuring the new vessels are equipped for sustainable performance.

This investment strengthens Shandong Ocean Shipping Group’s position in the dry bulk shipping sector, enabling it to handle increased cargo volumes across key trade routes. The addition of the 95,500 dwt vessels will bolster the group’s capacity to serve clients efficiently, reinforcing its role as a leading logistics provider in the maritime industry.
