China’s Largest Coalbed Methane Field Reaches Milestone Output

05 Jun 2025  by Xinhua
By the end of May 2025, the Daning-Jixian coalbed methane field in Shanxi Province, northern China, achieved a cumulative gas production of over 3.6 billion cubic meters, equivalent to more than 2.8 million tonnes of oil and gas, according to PetroChina Coalbed Methane Co., Ltd. This milestone marks the field as China’s first coalbed methane project to reach such a significant oil and gas equivalent output.

Coalbed methane, an unconventional natural gas, is recognized as a clean and strategic energy resource. Its use contributes to reducing mining risks, lowering greenhouse gas emissions, and addressing gas supply shortages. Shanxi Province holds substantial coalbed methane reserves, estimated at 8.31 trillion cubic meters at depths below 2,000 meters, accounting for nearly one-third of China’s total reserves.

Advancements in coalbed methane extraction technology have driven consistent production growth in the Daning-Jixian block. In 2024, the field produced 1.96 billion cubic meters of coalbed methane, achieving an annual output equivalent to 2 million tonnes of oil and gas, a global first for such a field. This progress highlights the region’s role in advancing sustainable energy production.

PetroChina Coalbed Methane Co., Ltd. stated: “This milestone makes it the country's first coalbed methane field to achieve such a cumulative oil and gas equivalent.” The success of the Daning-Jixian block underscores the potential of coalbed methane as a reliable energy source, supporting both environmental goals and energy security in the region.

The ongoing development of the Daning-Jixian field reflects a commitment to leveraging innovative technologies to enhance clean energy production, contributing to sustainable resource utilization and reduced environmental impact.
