Avangrid, a subsidiary of Iberdrola Group, has launched commercial operations at its 202-megawatt (MWdc) Powell Creek solar project in Putnam County, near Miller City, Ohio. This marks the company’s second energy facility in Ohio, following the 304MW Blue Creek project completed in 2012. The Powell Creek installation, equipped with 300,000 solar panels, generates enough electricity to power approximately 30,000 homes annually.

The project, strategically timed to meet anticipated peak summer demand in 2025, strengthens the regional electric grid by addressing rising energy needs from data centers, manufacturing, and electrification trends. During construction, it created 500 jobs, primarily filled by local union workers, boosting the local economy.

Avangrid CEO Pedro Azagra stated: “Putting this critical project into service demonstrates Avangrid’s unique ability to deliver on the energy needs of communities across the country. In addition to this needed power, Powell Creek is providing important benefits to the local, state and regional economies.” He highlighted the project’s role in generating jobs, tax revenue, and landowner payments, emphasizing its economic contributions.

The Powell Creek project is expected to contribute $31 million to local taxing jurisdictions over its lifetime and provide around $1.1 million annually in lease payments to landowners. Miller City mayor Jim Erford commented: “This is a major economic development opportunity that will help us grow for the first time in many years, bringing new families and businesses to our Northwest Ohio community.”

With the addition of Powell Creek, Avangrid’s total installed capacity in Ohio exceeds 500MW, sufficient to supply electricity to 100,000 U.S. homes each year. In 2024, the company’s Ohio operations contributed approximately $3 million in state and local taxes and $5 million in landowner lease payments. Avangrid currently employs 22 people in the state.

Since the start of 2025, Avangrid has added 600MW of energy capacity to the U.S. grid. The company operates 10.5 gigawatts of energy capacity across 80 facilities nationwide. In March 2025, Avangrid also began operations at its True North solar project in Texas, further expanding its renewable energy portfolio.

The Powell Creek project underscores Avangrid’s commitment to supporting clean energy development and economic growth in Ohio, enhancing grid reliability while fostering community benefits through employment and financial contributions.
