The Lovech BESS enhances Bulgaria’s energy grid by storing renewable energy and balancing electricity supply. Energy Minister Zhecho Stankov stated: “The facility, built from 111 battery containers on the territory of Lovech, will help Bulgaria’s energy system remain the most stable in the region.” This project supports Bulgaria’s ambition to expand its energy storage infrastructure.
Minister Stankov further noted: “It is the first step towards achieving the goal of having 10,000 megawatt hours of operating batteries in the country within the next year.” A recent tender allocated nearly 9,713 MWh for new energy storage projects, demonstrating strong momentum in Bulgaria’s renewable energy sector.
Situated in the Balkan Industrial Park in Lovech, the BESS operates alongside a 106.2 MW photovoltaic park, forming part of Bulgaria’s first licensed closed distribution network. The facility improves energy affordability and grid reliability by storing energy during off-peak periods and supplying it during high demand, benefiting households and businesses.
Valued at approximately €75.2 million, the project received a €29.6 million subsidy through Bulgaria’s RESTORE program, funded by the EU’s Recovery and Resilience Facility. This support highlights Bulgaria’s commitment to modernizing its energy infrastructure and increasing renewable energy adoption. The Lovech BESS sets a foundation for future storage initiatives, aligning with the national goal of reaching 10 GWh of battery storage capacity.
