Queensland Axes Plan for 450-MW Brookfield-Backed Wind Project

The Queensland government has withdrawn its approval for the Moonlight Range Wind Farm, a large-scale renewable energy project, citing non-compliance with the state’s updated planning laws. Initially approved in December 2024 by the State Assessment and Referral Agency (SARA), the project, proposed by Greenleaf Renewables and Brookfield Renewable, underwent a reassessment following a call-in process that incorporated community feedback.

The decision to halt the project was influenced by significant public concerns raised during consultations, particularly regarding the potential impact on local communities. The government emphasized the importance of community input in shaping major developments, reflecting new planning regulations designed to prioritize local perspectives.

Deputy Premier and Minister for State Development, Infrastructure, and Planning, Jarrod Bleijie, stated: “Queenslanders deserve to have a say on any major development in their local community, which is why our Government introduced new nation-leading laws to give them a voice on issues that impact the future of their towns.” The reassessment process highlighted the need for projects to align with both environmental and community expectations.

The Moonlight Range Wind Farm was planned for a site 40 kilometers northwest of Rockhampton, featuring up to 88 turbines with a tip height of 280 meters and an integrated battery storage system. Valued at AUD 1 billion (USD 652.2 million), the project was set to begin construction in 2026. The reversal of its approval underscores Queensland’s commitment to balancing renewable energy development with community priorities.

This decision reflects ongoing efforts to ensure sustainable energy projects align with local needs and regulatory standards. By prioritizing community feedback, the Queensland government aims to foster responsible development while supporting the region’s transition to renewable energy sources.
