Novel Australian Tech to Fuel 70 GW Green Hydrogen Energy Hub

16 May 2025  by pv magazine
InterContinental Energy, a green fuels developer based in Western Australia, has unveiled its patented P2(H2)Node hydrogen production system, designed to standardize large-scale hydrogen production. The company claims this innovative architecture replaces custom-designed hydrogen projects, enabling cost-effective and scalable solutions for industries such as green iron, fertilizers, power generation, shipping, and aviation fuels.

The P2(H2)Node system reduces production costs by 10% to 20% through standardized design, modular components, and minimized electrical infrastructure and storage needs. By streamlining these elements, the system supports faster adoption of hydrogen in major industrial sectors, enhancing efficiency and scalability.

Unlike traditional setups, the P2(H2)Node integrates electrolysis systems directly within wind and solar fields, reducing electrical losses. This approach transmits most renewable energy in molecular form as hydrogen, rather than electricity, improving overall efficiency. The system also allows hydrogen storage within pipeline networks, further optimizing resource use.

Richard Colwill, Head of Engineering and Innovation at InterContinental Energy, emphasized the system’s design focus, stating: “The key focus of the node architecture is to minimize electrical connection between the renewable energy and the hydrogen production.” This strategy enhances energy efficiency and reduces infrastructure costs, making large-scale hydrogen production more viable.

The P2(H2)Node’s modular and standardized framework enables rapid deployment and expansion, addressing the growing global demand for green hydrogen. By embedding production within renewable energy fields, the system leverages Western Australia’s abundant wind and solar resources, positioning the region as a leader in sustainable fuel production.

InterContinental Energy’s innovation supports industries transitioning to cleaner energy sources, offering a reliable and cost-effective solution for hydrogen production. The system’s ability to store hydrogen in pipelines ensures flexibility and resilience, catering to diverse applications from industrial manufacturing to transportation fuels.

This development marks a significant step in advancing green hydrogen technology, with InterContinental Energy’s standardized approach poised to accelerate the global shift toward sustainable energy. The P2(H2)Node system aligns with the increasing need for efficient, scalable hydrogen solutions, contributing to environmental sustainability and economic growth in Western Australia and beyond.
