On Thursday, Italgas, Europe’s largest gas distributor, and Edison Energia, a subsidiary of EDF, announced a contract to supply a blend containing green hydrogen to a facility operated by Italian food company Granarolo. The supply is set to begin in September 2025, marking a significant step in Italy’s industrial energy use.

This initiative is Italy’s first effort to incorporate a fuel blend with up to 20% green hydrogen for industrial purposes, according to the companies. The green hydrogen will be produced using renewable energy from a power plant established by Italgas in Sardinia, ensuring a sustainable production process.

The companies emphasized the innovative nature of the project, noting: “This is the first attempt in Italy to use a blend with up to 20% of green hydrogen for an industrial activity.” The collaboration aims to demonstrate the feasibility of integrating green hydrogen into industrial operations, leveraging renewable energy sources to reduce reliance on traditional fuels.

Green hydrogen is recognized as a key component in the European Union’s strategy to transition to cleaner energy systems. However, its broader adoption has faced challenges due to high production costs, which have limited its scalability. The Italgas and Edison Energia project seeks to address these barriers by showcasing a practical application in a major industrial setting.

The Granarolo plant, located in Italy, will serve as a testing ground for this blended fuel, with the potential to influence future energy practices in the food industry and beyond. The use of renewable energy from Sardinia’s power plant underscores the commitment to sustainability, aligning with Europe’s broader environmental goals.

Italgas and Edison Energia expressed optimism about the project’s impact, highlighting its role in advancing Italy’s energy innovation. The initiative is expected to provide valuable insights into the operational and economic aspects of using green hydrogen blends, potentially paving the way for wider adoption across other industries.

The contract reflects a collaborative effort to balance environmental objectives with industrial needs, ensuring that the energy supplied to Granarolo meets both operational requirements and sustainability standards. As the project progresses from September 2025, it will be closely monitored for its efficiency and scalability, offering a model for integrating green hydrogen into Italy’s industrial sector.
