Kewaunee Site Under Consideration for Nuclear New Build

15 May 2025  by world nuclear news
EnergySolutions and WEC Energy Group are exploring new nuclear energy development at the Kewaunee nuclear power plant site in Wisconsin, with plans to secure an early site permit (ESP) from the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). The Kewaunee plant, a 566 MWe pressurized water reactor operational since 1974, was acquired by EnergySolutions in 2022 after shutting down in 2013. The ESP process will evaluate site safety, environmental impacts, and emergency planning over multiple years.

The collaboration involves Milwaukee-based WEC Energy Group, parent of We Energies and Wisconsin Public Service. EnergySolutions will conduct studies and manage regulatory approvals, leveraging its nuclear industry expertise. The project aims to meet Wisconsin’s growing energy needs with reliable, carbon-free power.

“We are excited to partner with WEC Energy Group to explore the next generation of nuclear power,” said EnergySolutions President and CEO Ken Robuck. “With rising energy demand driven by data centers, artificial intelligence, and industrial growth, the need for reliable, carbon-free power has never been greater.”

WEC Energy Group spokesperson Brendan Conway said: “The new nuclear generation will provide Wisconsin an important source of carbon-free, 24/7 generation to help meet the state’s growing power demand, and provide customers energy security and stability.”

Wisconsin Senator André Jacque added: “As a longtime advocate for resuming nuclear generation at this site, I’m encouraged to see a serious, structured plan taking shape that prioritizes clean, reliable energy that Wisconsin and our nation urgently needs.”
