DFO Launches Offshore Wind Helicopter Initiative

17 May 2025  by renews
Dong Fang Offshore has partnered with Apex Aviation to establish Taiwan’s first self-operated helicopter fleet dedicated to offshore wind operations and maintenance (O&M). The collaboration, announced today, includes a capital investment in Apex Aviation to support the launch of an enhanced O&M initiative.

This initiative introduces an integrated sea-air operational system, designed to improve maintenance efficiency and emergency response for offshore wind farms. By combining helicopter and vessel-based operations, the system aims to deliver faster technical support, enhance safety, and optimize overall operational performance.

As offshore wind turbines along Taiwan’s western coast become fully operational, the need for rapid and effective maintenance has increased. The helicopter fleet will facilitate tasks such as personnel transport, emergency medical evacuations, equipment inspections, and maintenance activities. These services will complement existing maritime operations, ensuring quicker response times and greater reliability for wind farm operations.

Dong Fang Offshore chief executive Polin Chen stated: “We are committed to developing breakthrough solutions.” She added: “With Taiwan now ranked fifth globally in offshore wind turbine installations, a well-developed and efficient logistics support system will be a key competitive advantage for the industry. The launch of this integrated sea-air maintenance model, which has been two years in the making, will open a new chapter for Taiwan’s offshore wind O&M sector.”

The partnership with Apex Aviation merges aviation expertise with Dong Fang Offshore’s experience in offshore wind maintenance, creating a unified sea-air O&M platform. This collaboration is expected to streamline operations and set a new standard for efficiency in Taiwan’s renewable energy sector. The first helicopter is scheduled to begin service in the fourth quarter of this year.

This initiative reflects Taiwan’s growing prominence in the global offshore wind industry. By investing in innovative logistics solutions, Dong Fang Offshore aims to support the reliability and scalability of wind energy projects. The sea-air system is poised to enhance the maintenance of Taiwan’s offshore wind farms, contributing to the region’s sustainable energy goals and strengthening its position in the renewable energy market.
