Google, Shell PPA Will Extend Life of Wind Farm

07 May 2025  by renews
Google and Shell have signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) to extend the operational life of the NoordzeeWind project, the Netherlands’ first offshore wind farm. The 108MW facility, originally slated for decommissioning in 2027, will now continue operating for at least four additional years due to this agreement.

This marks the first instance of a corporate PPA being used to prolong the lifespan of an offshore wind farm. Under the deal, Google will purchase 100% of the wind farm’s 108MW capacity, enabling Shell to secure permit extensions and fund essential upgrades to maintain the facility’s functionality. The agreement supports the continued use of existing renewable energy infrastructure in the Netherlands.

Google’s energy strategy lead, Enrique Frances, emphasized the significance of the initiative: “This initiative helps to keep existing carbon-free energy resources on the grid that would otherwise have retired. To date, we’ve supported over 1GW of clean energy generation capacity in the Netherlands through PPAs. We hope this inspires similar partnerships, ensuring that existing renewable energy assets facing retirement continue to contribute to a sustainable future.”

The NoordzeeWind project, located off the Dutch coast, has been a key contributor to the country’s renewable energy goals since its commissioning. The PPA allows Shell to invest in critical maintenance and upgrades, ensuring the wind farm remains a reliable source of clean energy. This collaboration highlights the potential for corporate partnerships to extend the viability of aging renewable energy assets.

Google’s commitment to securing the full output of NoordzeeWind aligns with its broader efforts to support sustainable energy in the Netherlands. The company has already facilitated over 1 gigawatt of clean energy capacity in the region through similar agreements. The deal sets a precedent for other renewable energy projects nearing the end of their planned operational periods, demonstrating a model for sustaining clean energy production.

This partnership between Google and Shell underscores the importance of innovative agreements in maintaining renewable energy infrastructure. By extending the life of the NoordzeeWind project, the collaboration contributes to the Netherlands’ clean energy objectives and promotes a sustainable energy future.
