Two significant green hydrogen tenders were issued during the period by NTPC Renewable Energy and NLC India Limited. These tenders aim to expand the country’s green hydrogen infrastructure, leveraging renewable energy to produce clean fuel for industrial and energy sectors. The initiatives align with India’s goal of achieving a 5 MTPA green hydrogen capacity by 2030, reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
INOX Air Products marked a milestone by commissioning its first green hydrogen plant at Asahi India Glass Limited’s facility in Soniyana, Chittorgarh, Rajasthan. The plant, with a capacity of 190 tonnes per annum (TPA), supplies 95 TPA in its initial phase to support float glass manufacturing. Powered by solar energy through electrolysis, it reduces carbon emissions significantly. Rupinder Shelly, COO of Architectural Glass at Asahi India, said: “We take pride in being India’s first glass manufacturer to use Green Hydrogen.”
The SIGHT Program’s Tranche II projects reflect robust industry participation, with companies competing to secure capacity through competitive bidding. The allocated 450,000 MTPA capacity underscores India’s commitment to scaling up green hydrogen production, fostering innovation, and decarbonizing hard-to-abate sectors like industry and transport. NTPC Renewable Energy’s tender focuses on large-scale production, while NLC India Limited’s tender emphasizes regional development.
The Chittorgarh plant, developed under a 20-year agreement, sets a precedent for sustainable manufacturing. INOX Air Products handles the plant’s design, engineering, and operations, while Asahi India’s solar power investment ensures renewable energy for hydrogen production. Siddharth Jain, Managing Director of INOX Air Products, noted: “Our first Green Hydrogen plant is also India’s first for the float glass sector.”
These developments highlight India’s progress in green hydrogen, driven by supportive policies and private-sector investment. The projects are expected to create jobs, enhance energy security, and contribute to India’s renewable energy goals, positioning the country as a key player in the global clean energy transition.
