ReNew Opens 1.3GWp Solar Power Project in Rajasthan, India

21 Apr 2025  by NS energy
ReNew, an India-based renewable energy company, has launched a 1.3 gigawatt peak (GWp) solar power project in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan. The inauguration was attended by India’s Minister of New and Renewable Energy, Pralhad Joshi, and Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma. Spanning approximately 3,500 acres across villages such as Rampuriya, Bhinajpura, Hastinapur, and Masuriya in Jaisalmer district, the project strengthens Rajasthan’s renewable energy landscape.

The solar project uses solar panels that are produced by ReNew.

The solar panels, 90% of which are manufactured at ReNew’s facility in Jaipur, Rajasthan, ensure local production. The project will supply electricity to Rajasthan residents at a rate of INR2.18 per kilowatt-hour (kWh). It is expected to generate 2,490 million units of electricity annually, powering around 500,000 households and reducing CO2 emissions by approximately 2.3 million tonnes each year, supporting environmental sustainability.

The project also delivers economic benefits to the local community through 25-year land lease agreements, providing landowners with a steady income for unused land. This initiative fosters economic growth while promoting clean energy adoption in the region.

Sumant Sinha, ReNew’s founder, chairman, and CEO, stated: “It’s truly a moment of pride for us at ReNew. The state of Rajasthan has always been central to our growth story, with approximately 5GW of our total operational capacity located here, backed by investments exceeding Rs 21,000 crore [INR210bn]. Additionally, we also have a 4 GW solar module manufacturing facility in Jaipur, underscoring our long-term commitment to the Hon’ble Prime Minister’s vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat.”

ReNew, with a global clean energy portfolio of 17.4GW as of December 2024, is a leading independent power producer in India. The company provides solutions in clean energy, digitalization, storage, and carbon markets. In December 2024, ReNew received a non-binding proposal from a consortium of companies to take the company private, valuing it at $2.82 billion.

This Jaisalmer project underscores ReNew’s commitment to expanding renewable energy capacity and supporting India’s sustainable development goals, while contributing to local economic and environmental benefits.
